Associate Director, Environmental Risk Management
Location: Toronto, ON
The Associate Director, Environmental Risk Management is responsible for leading and evolving a scalable environmental technical services program across the global asset lifecycle ensuring consistent technical standards for environmental due diligence, development and operations.
We believe that time together in the office is important for OMERS and Oxford, the strength of our employees, and the work we do for our pension members. Our hybrid work guideline requires teams to come to the office a minimum of 4 days per week.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Senior Director, Insurance Risk Management, the successful incumbent would be working collaboratively with various business units including Investments, Legal, Asset Management, Property Management, Development, Leasing, Financing and other internal departments to navigate environmental risk and compliance management issues in an effective and appropriate manner and make appropriate recommendations.
Transaction, Development, Construction and Project Support:
- Define and review findings for environmental due diligence (Phase I & II, BCA, remediation) for acquisition, disposition, financing and credit transactions
- Advise on environmental representations, covenants, and warranties during financing and joint ventures
- Provide required documentation to support planning, entitlement, insurance and development execution
- Collaborate with Legal, Investment, Development and other business teams to ensure environmental risk is proactively addressed.
- Obtain the required environmental and geotechnical reports to support planning, entitlement, financing, and insurance placement for development projects.
- Obtain hazardous material reports required to abatement required due to renovations or demolition
Operations and Compliance Execution
- Develop and oversee execution of operational plans (e.g. hazardous materials plans, mold audits, radon testing, indoor air quality)
- Monitor remediation projects and regulatory closures for brownfield sites and contamination events
- Assist with regulatory permit and reporting compliance across jurisdictions
- Communicate updates and train relevant teams on evolving environmental regulations and internal protocols.
Business Enablement and Insurance Risk Management Support
- Establish fit-for-purpose environmental standards that reflect jurisdictional nuances and Oxford’s risk appetite
- Act as internal consultant and strategic partner across departments (e.g., Leasing, Asset Management, Legal)
- Identify and advise on emerging risks and provide actionable recommendations for mitigation
- Provide insurance support including underwriting data, policy placement, and claims management for environmental risks
Standards & Governance
- Develop technical standards, templates and programs with consistent practices and controls across jurisdictions
- Operationalize risk management tools (e.g management plans, audits, reporting templates, dashboards etc.) to ensure compliance and performance tracking
- Lead consulting performance expectations, including prequalification, performance monitoring, and scope development standards
- Define interaction points with Physical Risk, Legal, Investment, Development + Construction, Asset Management and Property Management to ensure clarity and avoid duplication.
